About the Position 

We're looking for a Network Manager to help strengthen the Grassroots Justice Network in Africa by leading learning, collaboration, and engagement across the region. This is a one-year term position. Working closely with Network members and colleagues around the world, you'll design and deliver learning opportunities, build strong partnerships, and help connect grassroots justice advocates across Africa and the world.

This is an exciting role for someone with deep legal empowerment experience who is eager to catalyze connections among legal empowerment groups for shared learning and advocacy. We’re looking for a network-builder and organizer who values peer learning through the exchange of experiences and collective reflection, adept at mobilizing partners across regional and global forums. 

Grassroots Justice Network

The Grassroots Justice Network is a global community of over 21,100 members from 175 countries. We are justice defenders, activists and organizers, educators, public servants, students, and people with a passion for justice. We tackle a wide range of justice issues, from gender equality to land rights, housing discrimination, statelessness, pretrial detention, and much more. We live and work in solidarity with communities facing injustice. The Grassroots Justice Network brings justice defenders together to connect, learn, and act. We make grassroots justice a reality by putting the power of law in the hands of people. While we come from different places, we are united by a common approach – a process known as legal empowerment. Through this process, we help communities to know, use, and shape the law, so that the people most impacted by injustice can exercise their rights and take part in decisions that affect their lives.

Building on our experience in strengthening democratic institutions and protecting people and the planet, Namati and the Grassroots Justice Network recently launched the Grassroots Justice Network Academy, the world's leading legal empowerment institute and learning community. The Academy combines a strong global core curriculum with specialized learning opportunities, long-term “learning journeys,” and hybrid formats that make legal empowerment training accessible to grassroots activists worldwide.

Responsibilities:

Grassroots Justice Network (GJN) Academy

• Lead the design and implementation of 2026-27 GJN Academy offerings across the Africa region. 

• Partner with network members to develop and implement a regional learning strategy that strengthens legal empowerment in both anglophone and francophone Africa. In coordination with Namati colleagues and Network members, design and organize GJN Academy learning offerings, including global and regional courses and workshop/s, cross-regional learning opportunities and exchanges, discussion forums, and community paralegal program incubators.

• Oversee the roll-out of GJN Academy offerings in the region, including coordination with network members serving as co-creators, faculty, and facilitators; implementation of synchronous and self-paced courses and workshops, and moderation of conversations on the learning platform.

• Lead the development of knowledge products generated from learning activities, in coordination with global knowledge synthesis and dissemination efforts. 

• Partner with core network members on joint research and learning efforts, including cross-regional activities with members in Asia and Latin America.  

• Contribute to the network team’s overall planning, development, and implementation of learning opportunities - globally, regionally, and thematically.

Membership

• Expand and deepen engagement of Africa-based members in community-building, learning, and advocacy activities.

• Convene regular core group meetings in coordination with the regional anchors. 

• Promote Academy-related learning offerings widely, recruiting a broader, more diverse membership in the region, with a focus on specific groups related to environment, gender, youth groups, paralegal associations, and membership-based groups.

• Provide technical expertise, training, and programmatic support to Africa-based network members.

Advocacy

• Partner with colleagues on the development and implementation of regional advocacy strategies for Africa, ensuring close alignment with global advocacy priorities. 

• Build and strengthen relationships with regional institutions, especially by connecting network members with regional bodies such as the Africa Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

• Help strengthen partnerships with network members and allies in the region in the pursuit of a common advocacy agenda. 

• Promote participation of Africa-based network members in global advocacy initiatives and strategic country-level advocacy engagements. 

Supporting Network Initiatives

• Contribute to strategic planning and strategizing at the network level.

• Ensure close alignment and coordination of Africa work with Namati country and global programmes and broader cross-regional and global network activities. 

• Support resource mobilization for Africa regional work. 

Here’s what you might have tackled last week 

• Co-designed the agenda for an upcoming GJNA course with network members from Kenya and Senegal, helping them translate practical experiences into engaging learning sessions.

• Moderated an online conversation, either a webinar or a live session, where community justice practitioners from across the region shared lessons on strengthening paralegal programs and exchanged practical approaches to common challenges.

• Drafted a short learning brief highlighting key insights from a regional workshop and shared it with network members for continued collaboration and knowledge. 

• Helped write and refine an advocacy strategy document for engaging the Africa Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR).  

• Worked with colleagues from Asia and Latin America to design a cross-regional exchange on community paralegal practice.

About you (Requirements): 

• Track record of getting results: ​You’re a strategic, dynamic leader who makes things happen, with extensive experience in a relevant program area (e.g., training design, community engagement) or thematic area (e.g., land, environment, and climate justice, gender justice).

• Experience in legal empowerment: You have deep experience in legal empowerment: at least 7 years of experience designing, managing, or implementing programs related to legal empowerment, grassroots justice, or community-led social justice initiatives. You understand the realities of working alongside justice advocates and communities and can quickly contribute without needing to build foundational knowledge of the field. 

• Experience facilitating practitioner learning: You have coached and mentored others, developed training, built co-learning opportunities across coalitions, developed popular education materials, or otherwise facilitated interactive peer exchange.

• Strong knowledge of the African region: You have experience working across multiple African countries and understand the opportunities and challenges of supporting diverse organizations in different contexts.

• A creative, relentless problem-solver:  It’s in your nature to work tirelessly on a problem - you don’t rest until you’ve identified a great solution. And although careful planning and execution define your work, when challenges arise, you quickly reorient and identify the best new course of action. You’re well-regarded for your ability to make reasoned decisions, even in the face of limited or conflicting information.

Nice-to-haves

• Professional working proficiency in French is desirable.

• Experience supporting regional or international advocacy initiatives. 

• Experience engaging with regional institutions or coalitions such as the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR), ECOWAS, or similar bodies.

• Experience developing knowledge products, facilitation guides, toolkits, or other learning resources.

Location

We’re looking for a successful candidate to be based in the Nairobi Office and to follow Namati’s hybrid office policy, which requires staff to report to the office at least two days per week. This is a one-year term position.

Compensation and benefits

The offer range for this position is an annual compensation of 5,800,000- 7,100,000 KES/year. Final compensation will be commensurate with the depth of experience that the selected candidate brings. Namati also offers excellent benefits, which include health coverage, generous paid time off, retirement or old-age plan contributions, sick leave, and parental leave. All staff also have access to funds for professional development opportunities.
